Inspiring the Next Generation of Geotechnical Engineers
We recently welcomed three A-Level students to Dunelm Geotechnical & Environmental for a work experience placement, giving them the opportunity to gain a hands-on introduction to the world of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering.
Rather than simply observing, the students got involved in a variety of activities covering different stages of our work, including:
🔹 Desk study work, guided by one of our Principal Engineers
🔹 Geotechnical laboratory testing, gaining an insight into how soil properties are assessed
🔹 A site visit, where they experienced real-world health & safety requirements and site working practices
🔹 Carrying out Wenner Array Resistivity testing, providing practical experience of a geophysical investigation technique
Work experience is an important opportunity to give young people a better understanding of the diverse careers available within ground engineering and, importantly, to experience how the theory they learn in the classroom translates into real projects.
A big thank you to everyone at Dunelm who took the time to share their knowledge and experience, and to our three students for getting stuck in and making the most of their time with us.
We hope we’ve inspired some future geotechnical engineers!
